Kuhlmann encouraged with Cobras’ opening-week play

Industrial didn’t intend to wait a week longer than its District 29-2A opponents to start the season.The Cobras had arranged to play either Boling or Van Vleck in Zero Week, but those plans were scuttled when the teams ended up in the same district. more >>

Blackcats pick up first win of season over Yates

BAY CITY – Bay City gave coach Robert Blackmon his first win by claiming a 28-7 decision over Houston Yates on Saturday night at Memorial Stadium. The Blackcats (1-1) took a 13-0 lead on a fumble recovery in the end zone by linebacker Jonathan Schneider and a touchdown run by Godwin Wyche. more >>

Lady Flyers drop pair at Plano tournament

PLANO – St. Joseph dropped a pair of matches Saturday at the Plano Prestonwood Christian Tournament. Summer Brooks had 9 kills and 4 blocks for the Lady Flyers (8-11) in a 25-15, 25-16 loss to POPE and Sarah Tucker had seven kills and Jade Chapa had 11 digs in a 25-21, 25-17 loss to Canyon Creek Christian Academy. more >>

Escalante, Thomas earn all-tournament honors

RUNGE – Kayla Escalante and Haley Thomas earned all-tournament honors and Faith Academy won two of three matches to finish third at the Runge/Nordheim Volleyball Tournament. Ashley Tyau combined for 35 kills and 23 blocks as the Lady Cougars (9-8) defeated Prairie Lea 21-25, 25-11, 25-18 and Pettus 25-22, 16-25, 25-13 and lost to Runge 25-22, 25-22, 25-18. more >>

Calhoun wins both titles

PORT LAVACA – Calhoun captured the boys and girls varsity titles Saturday at the 2008 Calhoun Beach Invitational Cross Country Meet. Calhoun’s Corey Barrientos won the 3-mile boys race in a time of 16 minutes, 44 seconds and Calhoun’s Ashleigh Gottschalt won the 2-mile girls race in 13:08. more >>

Columbus 38, Van Vleck 20

COLUMBUS – Kade Kucera accounted for 269 yards of total offense for Van Vleck as the Leopards lost 38-20 to Columbus on Friday. Kucera helped Van Vleck (0-2) strike first in the game with a 90-yard touchdown pass to Terrence Allinnience in the first quarter. Columbus punched in a pair of touchdowns before Kucera found the endzone again, this time with a 6-yard run. Columbus kicked a field goal as time expired in the second to give the Cardinals a 17-13 advantage going into the half. more >>

Shiner St. Paul 40 S.A. Cornerstone 12

SHINER - Travis Sauer and Gil Hodges combined for 341 yards rushing and six touchdowns to carry the St. Paul Cardinals to a 40-12 win over San Antonio Cornerstone. Hodges paved the way with 207 yards on 13 carries with TD runs of 23, 25 and 40 yards, while Sauer added 134 yards on 27 carries with TD runs of 26, 2 and 5 yards. more >>

Weimar 35, Boling 20

BOLING – Weimar’s ground game defeated Boling’s air assault, helping the Wildcats to a 35-20 over the Bulldogs. Weimar (2-0) put 214 yards on the ground. The Wildcats were led by quarterback Brixx Hawthorn, who rushed 13 times for 81 yards and 26-yard touchdown. Hawthorn also threw for 2 touchdowns, hitting Marcus Rhodes on an 18-yard play, and Tyler Wright for 23 yards. Wright also ran for a 4-yard run. more >>

Ganado 22 Nixon-Smiley 14

NIXON – Ganado took full advantage of seven Nixon-Smiley turnovers, beating the Mustangs 22-14. Ganado intercepted Nixon-Smiley five times. Both teams defenses also scored safeties in the fourth quarter. more >>

GEORGE WEST – Turnovers and penalties proved to be the Goliad Tigers’ undoing as they fell 41-0 to George West on Friday. The ball-hawking Longhorns (2-0) shut down Goliad’s (0-2) passing attack, picking off Chris Carrera four times and limiting Aaron Franklin to just two receptions for 10 yards. more >>

BRUNI – Bruni turned two of five Woodsboro turnovers into touchdowns and held the Eagles scoreless until the fourth quarter en route to winning 22-6 at home. The Badgers (1-1) scored twice within a minute in the second quarter to take a 14-point lead going into half time. more >>

VANDERBILT – The Industrial Cobras found plenty of paths to the endzone as they rolled to a 39-18 win over Louise on Friday. The Cobras (1-0) opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 35-yard scamper by Matt Anderson, the first of two scores for the Industrial running back. more >>

Gobblers roll past Rio Hondo

ROBSTOWN – Cuero dominated Rio Hondo on offense and defense, sending the Gobblers to a 42-7 win. Cuero’s offense racked up more than 500 total yards, while its defense kept Rio Hondo (1-1) scoreless for three quarters. more >>

Natalia 39, Karnes City 24

NATALIA – Karnes City outscored Natalia in the second half, but it was Natalia that came away with the 39-24 win on Friday. Natalia (2-0) got out to a 19-2 lead going into halftime. The Badgers’ lone score of the half came on an 85-yard return of a blocked PAT by Mikey Kinney. more >>

Flatonia 34 Sacred Heart 0

FLATONIA - Jordan Williams threw for 237 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Flatonia bulldogs to a 34-0 win over the Sacred Heart Indians. Williams had scoring tosses of 21, 17, 33 and 59 yards. He connected with Adrian Lighteard on two of the strikes along with Gabriel Velasquez and Zach Mikulenka on the other two scores. more >>

LOCKHART – Jordan Meredith tried to lead the Gonzales Apaches to lead the Gonzales Apaches to a fourth-quarter comeback, but came up short in to Lockhart 34-26. The Apaches (0-2) trailed Lockhart (2-0) 15-12 going into what became a wild fourth quarter that saw the teams combine for five touchdowns. more >>
