Editor, the Advocate:I personally find it extremely ludicrous that anyone would turn loose an aggressive breed of dog to do his daily duties on someone else’s property, supervised or unsupervised. I still walk five miles almost every day and have since 1978 and subsequently have had many many encounters with dogs. I almost invariably discover that somehow I caused the problem, if I had not been walking where I was and startled their baby while doing his daily duty, he probably would not have attacked me. I presently carry a heavy cane which I have named my Doggie Whacker. I probably should start carrying a heavy baseball bat. Just the other day, I was stopped by a local lady who showed me extensive scars on her left arm and explained that she received them from a local Pit Bull while she was out walking. I asked her what happened to the dog, and she said she did not know. Well, I assure you that if I had extensive scars from a dog attack that both me and my lawyer would know what happened to that animal. To me it’s a quality of life issue. more >>
Editor, the Advocate: To the mayor of Cuero: Well, Mayor, your party is over. Did you enter a limbo contest because you can get real low, as low as a snake. You lied to me, looked me in the face and lied to me. You want to talk to me about the City Charter, because I have a lot of questions to ask you about the City Charter. more >>
Editor, the Advocate: On behalf of my late husband, Benito Torres, I would like to express all my thanks to everyone for the flowers, the Masses, the support, their gifts and especially the prayers and love everyone gave us both. more >>
Editor, the Advocate: I want to comment on the cameras installed at intersections. Wouldn’t it be a better use of taxpayer’s money if we had cameras and other surveillance devices installed in our public servants’ offices and homes to protect us, the taxpayers, from our public servants? more >>
Editor, the Advocate: The family of Debra Claire Wearden Hampton extends heartfelt thanks and appreciation for all the concern, outreach, love, support and prayers given to her and her family. Each expression lightened the weight of our journey. We thank all those who brought food, made visits, phone calls, sent sympathy cards, flowers and made donations for Masses, to St. Mary’s Church and St. Joseph High School. Thank you to St. Mary’s Altar Society and Catholic Daughters Court of St. Ann #369 for all they did. We are grateful to our pastor, Msgr. James C. Brunner, Fathers Gabriel Oduro Tawaih and Donald Hayden for concelebrating the Mass. To the Sisters of the Incarnate Word for the beautiful songs chosen; they would have pleased Debra. Colonial Funeral Home Director Richard Dawson and his staff, Gary Rangnow and anyone we may have overlooked, God love and bless you for all the kindness you showed us. more >>
Editor, the Advocate: What have they done for us lately? Try to ban free speech (Fairness Doctrine), try to remove “God” from everything, pass every bill (94 percent in the Democratic Senate) without debate or roll call, keep us dependant on foreign oil by banning U.S. drilling, failure to allow states to secure their borders, sign blank checks they can’t pay, and on, and on, and on. more >>
The Victoria Police Department should be commended for its recruitment program. Within a short time, the department replenished its police force after a deficit of 15 officers at one point. Many police departments hire from smaller police departments when openings become available. While this might be the usual hiring practice among police departments, the quality of personnel might not always be up to par. The Victoria Police Department has invested in the Police Academy at The Victoria College, and this was a wise investment. And the city has remained competitive, where salaries are concerned. more >>
Editor, the Advocate: Does anyone really doubt that Victoria is ready to support a four-year university? It seems to me that the case has been made. The message is — this community is clearly pro education. My dad knew it in 1962 when he moved his family here, largely because of Victoria Junior College. The same can be said for my father-in-law in 1954. This community, along with surrounding communities and beyond, is full of people who built a solid foundation here as they pursued their education leading to quality lives that have made a difference. When the University of Houston-Victoria was established, almost 35 years ago, our community changed. That change was good for every single citizen. Many studies support the impact a university has on a community and it’s citizens, citizens of every socioeconomic level. more >>
Editor, the Advocate: Totally Texas, Re: Hire or deport, Sept. 1. A job applicant submitted a counterfeit Social Security card and the employer reported it. Suddenly, it became an anti-immigration issue because the person involved was an illegal, arrested, jailed and deported. The use of a counterfeit Social Security card is illegal and has nothing to do with immigration status. Are employers required to hire persons who are breaking the law just because of their immigration status or ethnic group? The article did not state the employer turned the illegal in. Any U.S. citizen who uses a counterfeit Social Security card is subject to incarceration and prosecution, so why are the illegals exempt? Maybe we should start claiming to be illegal to skirt the laws of this United States of America. more >>
Editor, the Advocate: Whoever came up with the idea of a four-day workweek is out of touch with reality and apparently does not listen or read up on the news of the “American People.” To bring it up is totally absurd. It seems the idea is to punish the working class while enriching the corporations. The American people are struggling as it is, and to burden them with less money while paying the same amount on bills is really stupid. more >>
Editor, the Advocate: Presidential hopeful John Edwards chose to have sex with a campaign assistant and is dis-invited to the party. Confessing did not win him absolution even with extenuating circumstances; his defense was that the public adulation attending his presidential candidacy caused him to lose his moral bearings, and, besides, his wife’s breast cancer was in remission at the time. more >>

Editor, the Advocate: Victoria is in the geographic center of three of the fastest growing metropolitan cities in the U.S.: Austin, Houston, and San Antonio. Many college-bound students seek the opportunity to attend a four-year institution of higher learning in new surroundings. more >>

Editor, the Advocate: According to a cartoonist anyone who does not vote for Obama is racist. I believe this makes the cartoonist the biggest racist of all. He is trying to make this political race about color and wants you to not study Obama’s character. more >>

Editor, the Advocate: You want the views of the citizens? Well, here goes, not that it will do much good: The judicial system will keep on letting the criminals of major offenses go with a slap on the hand, especially if he is an officer of the law. No telling how many more teens he might have blackmailed into doing his bidding. more >>
Editor, the Advocate: I am thrilled at the prospect of having UHV expand into a four-year university. I believe this is a great opportunity for our community. In today’s global market, an educated workforce is essential for success. This expansion will provide the education our citizens need as well as an educated workforce to attract new businesses. more >>
