Calhoun County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Guillermo Rodriguez, 19, and four teenage boys on suspicion of burglary shortly after midnight, Sheriff B.B. Browning said.
Jackson County Sheriff’s Office told Browning’s deputies to watch for a green car with one headlight that might be connected to several burglaries.
Burglars broke into a handful of Ganado convenience stores this week, Jackson County Sheriff Andy Louderback said.
Lottery tickets were taken from one store. Some were winners. They were cashed in Calhoun County, Louderback said.
Thursday night, Wharton County deputies reported three burglar alarms within a half hour, Louderback said. Then, at 11:19 p.m. several people burglarized a Ganado Shell station, he said.
A deputy remembered the lotto tickets and warned Calhoun County officials a band of burglars might be on the way.
About half an hour later, an alarm sounded at Village Grocery in Point Comfort. Deputies saw the green, single-lighted car driving away from the store and called for help tracking down the suspects. They were arrested near the intersection of state highways 238 and 35. Port Lavaca Police aided deputies.
No cash was stolen from the Village Grocery, Browning said.
“They just tore the place up,” he said. “They got the register open, but they didn’t get any money.”
Cigarettes and other items were stolen, Browning said.
The five teens said they were from Pasadena, although Rodriguez is a Mexican national.
Rodriguez is being held at the Calhoun County Jail and the four juvenile suspects are in the Victoria County Juvenile Detention Center.
