One of the scariest moments for any wade fisherman is having a shark approach and attack his stringer of fish.

One Victoria fisherman said he has found a way to combat that problem with what he calls his shark proof fishing/bait bucket.

Monroe Rieger has spent much of his life on the water and says he probably has left his foot prints in all the hole, lakes and shores along the Port O’Connor shoreline the last 50 years.

“Sharks have always been here and the scary thing is they will come up and get your fish,” Rieger said. “I’ve had them take the bottoms out of my donut baskets, but all they really want are the fish. You have to remember you are in their habitat and when they are after food they are going to go where they can find it.”

Tinkering with odds and ends, Rieger says he has found one way to beat the odds of sharks stealing his fish.

With the use of two 5 gallon plastics buckets and, a couple of noodle type floating devices he has constructed a container that simply hides the fish from the predators.

“Sharks don’t see real well and look for the movement, so if you take that way it alleviates the temptations,” Rieger said.

Rieger says he connects the two bucket together end-to-end and attaches the floating noodles to each side and then cuts a hole in the middle and screens it to allow the fish to be put into the bucket. He also tacks on a tackle box, a pole holder and a drink holder.

“It will hold a limit of fish,” Rieger said. “They are also very stable and you can even sit on them in the water if you get tired.”

While not for sale to the public, Rieger has at least six of the buckets he will have in the raffle and auction during the 6th annual Knights of Columbus Readin’, Ritin’ and Reelin’ Fishing Tournament set for Aug. 1-2 at Port O’Connor. the event is sponsored by Holy Family KC Council 9088 with the proceeds going to benefit the Nazareth Academy School.

Rieger said proceeds from the prior events have gone to ward the construction of a computer room and lab at the school as well as a new school bus.

“It geared as a family event and we try to get the kids involved,” Rieger said.

And while he doesn’t fully guarantee his shark proof boxes he says standing still and saying a couple of “Hail Mary’s” would probably help as well.
